When the photo of today’s hat came in, I confess that I got just a little bit baby hungry. I have been forbidden from getting baby hungry ever again, but this adorable little munchkin in her cute little hat made me rethink that for a few minutes. Today’s hat was created for the challenge by Melody Rogers of Melody’s Makings. I love hearing more about other designers — and other crafters in general. They’re such amazing people!
Where are you from? Tell us a little bit about your family.
I’m from Colorado, and though we’ve done a bit of moving around over the last few years (including a short stint in Hawaii!) we’ve ultimately ended up right back where we started. In fact, we’re living in my childhood home right now!
We’re super blessed to be living a lifestyle that lends our family a bit more freedom, and my husband and I both currently work from home. We get to spend lots of time with our 4 year old son, and have another little one currently on the way.
Why do you crochet? How did you learn?
Why do I crochet? Hmmm. I’m trying to remember exactly why I started in the first place, haha! Somehow over the years, it has morphed into a deep seated need, and now I’d say it’s more of an obsession than anything! Luckily, it’s also what feeds my family, so I feel less guilty about being so “hooked.”
What are your can’t-live-without essentials for crocheting (or other crafts)?
I’m totally glued to my tape measure, my yarn needle, my 5.5mm crochet hook, and my Addi Interchangeable needle set. These things all go with me….everywhere! I have a very large purse, thank goodness.
What do you do to make your stitching space an inspiring and comfortable place to work?
Right now I don’t really have a dedicated stitching space…..though I have plenty of room to create one. Since I work from home, though, I always end up stitching in the living room so I can keep an eye on my 4 year old as he does his various activities. I do have a wonderful bookshelf downstairs that I’ve filled with yarn…..and it’s super inspiring just to stand in front of it and soak up the colors. Kind of like that feeling we all get at the yarn shop 😉
When do you feel the most creative?
I’m always coming up with new design ideas in those few minutes before I drift off to sleep. My husband often wakes up to me chatting his ear off about the idea I had the night before.
Which of your designs is your favorite (or which one are you the most proud of)? Why?
My favorite design is always changing….probably because I’m always making something new! I tend to love the latest one most, which is currently the Serenity Slouch. It’s a gorgeous slouch hat with all sizes baby through adult, and it has a real element of classic beauty. Sometimes I get so caught up in trying to make something super unique or new, that I forget the value of designs that are a bit more traditional! I also love this one because I made both a knit and a crochet version….and they both turned out equally gorgeous. A challenge I was super happy to overcome!
We live in such a mass-produced, buy-it-now society where everything is either a click or a short drive away. Why should people continue to make things by hand?
There’s simply nothing quite as special as creating a real connection with another person. Whenever we create something from the heart, it’s impossible for people not to notice. Especially in such a fast paced society, it’s rare to experience those connections regularly….which is why it’s so important that we continue to create opportunities for them.
This is where I think we crafters are ahead of the curve – we value and understand connecting with others and work to spread that love just a little bit farther with each handmade piece. This is also the foundation that I’ve built my business on, and that I look for in other businesses.
What inspired the hat you included in this challenge?
I’m just a fan of pom-poms….what could be cuter than adding two to the earflaps of a hat!?
